I Voted First Time in 45 Years

For our Nation's Soul

For my entire adult life, I repudiated participation in the voting process due to my deep cynicism and disgust of the system and the motives, inferred from documented (in)actions, of our politicians. So it was until this year. Observing the crescendo of the ever-widening, ever more partisan, rift in our country being deliberately and systematically exploited by those in power for political/personal gain at any expense but their own, that cynical disgust became a resolve to make one voice heard in spite of the corrupted state of the system with the hope that rational minds will prevail against what has become the greatest existential threat to our civil liberties and the nation’s collective soul.

The Trump administration has obliterated, killed and buried the notion of a standard of competence, integrity, intelligence, inclusiveness, leadership, and effort we ought to collectively demand of this nation’s leaders. My vote is not for Democrats or for “blue,” per se, but for the return of thoughtful, intelligent, science- and fact-driven leadership that aims to unite by bridging differences, not exacerbating them. We need leadership who wish to, and are capable of leading a united nation.

I know that my words will have little impact on how anyone will vote, but all I hope is that people earnestly consider the sort of society they want themselves and their descendants to live in, ceteris paribus, and not one they believe they will ascend to in their aspirational dreams based on the empty promises of political charlatans who have zero interest in helping them actualize those, for all intents and purposes, impossible ambitions.

Go vote!
